Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes
Servings: 1 simmer pot

Ingredients

  • Simmer Pot Ingredients
  • 1 medium orange freshly sliced
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole cloves
  • For Simmering
  • - 6 cups water approximately 1.4 liters

Equipment

  • 3-quart saucepan
  • Cutting board
  • Kitchen knife
  • Measuring cup

Method

  1. Wash the orange. Rinse the orange thoroughly and remove any produce stickers.
  2. Slice the fruit. Cut the orange into thin, even rounds.
  3. Add the ingredients. Place the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves in a 3-quart saucepan.
  4. Pour in the water. Add 6 cups of water, ensuring the saucepan has adequate space above the liquid.
  5. Heat gently. Warm over medium heat until gentle steam and small bubbles appear.
  6. Reduce the heat. Turn the burner to low and maintain a gentle simmer without vigorous boiling.
  7. Monitor the water. Stay nearby and check the water level every 20–30 minutes.
  8. Replenish as needed. Carefully add more hot water whenever the liquid level becomes low.
  9. Turn off the heat. Stop simmering when finished or whenever you cannot supervise the saucepan.

Notes

Stronger fragrance: Add another cinnamon stick or a few pieces of fresh orange peel. Allow the scent to develop before making further adjustments.
Lighter fragrance: Use one cinnamon stick and omit the cloves for a gentler citrus aroma.
Ingredient substitutions: Replace the orange with a mandarin or add one small rosemary sprig for an herbal variation.
Simmering duration: Enjoy the fragrance for approximately 1–2 hours while continuously supervising the pot and maintaining sufficient water.
Storage and reuse: Cool promptly, refrigerate in a covered container, and preferably reuse within 24 hours. Discard if the ingredients develop mold, unusual odors, or other signs of spoilage.
Slow cooker option: Use the same ingredients and water in a suitable slow cooker on LOW, following the manufacturer's lid instructions. Monitor regularly and never leave the appliance unattended.
Important: This simmer pot is for home fragrance only. Do not eat, taste, serve, or drink the mixture. Never leave a heated simmer pot unattended, and never allow the pot to boil dry. Keep the pot and hot liquid away from children and pets.
If you have pets and are unsure about a particular ingredient, check with your veterinarian before using it in your home.
