Method
- Wash the orange. Rinse the orange thoroughly under running water.
- Slice the orange. Cut into thin rounds, keeping the peel attached.
- Combine ingredients. Place the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves in a medium saucepan.
- Add water. Pour in 4 cups of water, ensuring the ingredients are mostly covered.
- Heat gently. Warm over medium heat until small bubbles and gentle steam appear.
- Reduce heat. Lower the temperature to maintain a gentle simmer without vigorous boiling.
- Monitor the water. Check every 20–30 minutes and add more hot water before the liquid becomes low.
- Finish safely. Turn off the heat when finished or whenever you cannot supervise the saucepan.
Notes
- Stronger fragrance: Add a few strips of fresh orange peel or one additional cinnamon stick for a more noticeable Christmas aroma.
- Lighter fragrance: Reduce the cloves to 3–4 or shorten the supervised simmering session.
- Ingredient substitutions: Completely dried orange slices can replace fresh oranges, although the fragrance may differ. Add one fresh rosemary sprig for an herbal variation.
- Simmering duration: A supervised session of 1–2 hours is suitable when sufficient water is maintained. Fragrance strength and water evaporation vary.
- Reuse and storage: You may reuse cooled ingredients later the same day. For next-day reuse, cool promptly, transfer to a covered container, refrigerate, and use within about 24 hours. Discard if spoiled or improperly stored.
- Slow cooker option: Use a slow cooker only if its manufacturer permits this purpose. Follow its water-level, heating, and lid instructions, and continue supervising.
Important: This simmer pot is for home fragrance only. Do not eat, taste, serve, or drink the mixture. Never leave a heated simmer pot unattended, and never allow the pot to boil dry. Keep the pot and hot liquid away from children and pets.
If you have pets and are unsure about a particular ingredient, check with your veterinarian before using it in your home.
